Community Garden Outreach Program

The Eden Earthworks Project Fresh: Mountain View Community Gardens, is an agricultural educational program designed to increase the number of food growers, food marketers and healthy food choices.  The gardens are located in the heart of the highest food insecure region on Hawaii Island.  The Mountain View Gardens is a drug-free and organic farm; a learning environment for families, children, youth and seniors.

Eden Earthworks Project Fresh; Mountain View Community Gardens, is donating farm plots (tilled and soil tested), tools and information about organic farming, greenhouse practice and how-to develop a seed-bank. This eco-friendly farming project is creating opportunity for self-employment, increasing income and nutritional intake and also building hope and confidence. We envision a network of rural community areas rich in food production and volunteer-run farmers markets. Teaching people to produce food for themselves and the community is essential to our island's sustainability.

Building healthy soil with understanding, using locally available organic matter, is essential to boosting our vegetable beds into sustainable and steady production. In order to make this happen, some community participants  volunteer to help layer our compost and then ‘flipping’ it over once weekly until the pile reaches 160 degrees.

Putting healthy food on the table during tough economic times has caused folks everywhere to take a closer look at saving money and considering what they can produce for themselves.  But besides the economic advantage, when you grow your own food, you have security in knowing where your food comes from and who has handled it.
